Travel opens your mind, its true. Creative ideas fall fast and easy in an open mind - also true.
A recent visit to the UK resulted in me dumping my earlier idea for the 'Bugs' challenge piece, after I saw this gorgeous fragment of an old old old garment at the Victoria and Albert Museum :
To my absolute astonishment, this jaw dropping beauty was made from beetle wings !!
I remember encountering plenty of these jewel beetles as a child, fascinated by the way the light shone off the wings in a hundred different colours ! Sadly, you don't see them much anymore and I feel sad that my children won't get to pause and wonder at their ethereal beauty.
While the beauty of the embroidery and workmanship delighted me, I felt saddened by the thought of thousands of beetles having their wings pulled off. In my mind, I saw them saying ,''NOPE'', shredding the garment and flying away whole.
Sigh !

Yep! Love it! And the story!
ReplyDeleteThat is a wonderful inspiration. I love going to that museum for inspiration and still have an unfinished Medieval piece based on a visit there.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting fact, but felt the pain, what those beetle would have felt when their wings were pulled off.
ReplyDeleteLovely piece of writing and a lovely quilt too
ReplyDeleteWOW
ReplyDeleteAn interesting twist on the theme.
ReplyDeleteYou have created a lovely piece Tina
Great inspiration and story. I wonder why there are no more beetles ? It seems that insects all over the world are not as abundant as they used to be mostly due to pesticides I think. Makes you wonder what it's doing to the world ecosystem. I really love your finished piece !
