Structure - Monique Kleinhans

The Calm in the Storm
The chaos of my life the past few months left me feeling as if I could use some extra structure, and I found myself near the end of the deadline to create something before the space and mind opened up with an idea and also the time to work it out into fabric.  Thankfully, I was able to comlete my project in time, and I'm thrilled--if not by the end result itself, but by the fact that in being able to create and explore a new work means that the ground might finally be resting undernearth my feet once more.

For this piece I knew that I wanted to play with lutradur and create a background that was a variety of textures and fibers needle punched together.  There is so much structure to each and every snowflake that falls (and we've had quite a few of them this winter), so that also seemed a good focus object.

To explore the theme a bit further I decided to play with the structure of the entire work by double mounting the center. The center is composed of lace, satin, metalic fabric and wool roving.

  10. The layers, textures and stitching in the background provide lots of movement and turmoil and the simple snowflake provides a resting place for the eyes.....the calm after your stormy year. The double mount is a beautiful frame.
