Structure - Marty Mason

What a beach party it was!

It wasn't until two weeks ago that I knew what structure I wanted to create.  A group of us rented a house in Florida and spent the week sewing and sightseeing and shopping.  It was there that I saw so many colorful structures, especially beach structure.....as in beach umbrellas.  Even the magazines had pages filled with colorful umbrellas.  I snapped a picture of a restaurant advertisement which became my guide to finishing the structure challenge.

First stroke of luck was finding a package of 2 1/2" squares.  These little swatches just fit the bill and made light of completing the background of blue sky, blue-green gulf water, sandy beach and tufts of grass.

From there it was easy to make a paper template of a beach umbrella to use to cut  bright Kaffe Fassett shot cottons.  The umbrella pole was added and these little beach structures were done.

Every umbrella got stitched down so the wind couldn't grab them under the belly!
And even more quilting was added to further secure my beach.

Structure - even a winter beach can have a bright beckoning structure.

  8. This is great! I love the idea and the techniques....I'm assuming that nothing is attached prior to the quilting holding it all down and in place.....ingenious!
