Structure - Chris Daly

Facade - Chris Daly

I grew up in the Chicagoland Area.  All of my life I have loved the diverse and varied architecture of the city.  One of my favorite buildings is the Sullivan Building (formerly known as the Carson Pirie Scott building) located in downtown Chicago.  The metal work designed by Louis Sullivan is from an era gone by.  We will never see architecture with so much thoughtfulness and beauty again in our lifetimes.  It saddens me to know this style of building is from an era lost.

This inspiration photo by Tim Samuelson was the basis for my quilt.  The photo was taken during the recent restoration process when all oxidation had been removed from the metalwork. The photo was altered using Photoshop then printed on cotton fabric using an inkjet printer.

Here is the detail of the machine quilting I did.

  2. What a fun idea. I just love the movement of this piece, and I think it would be fun to quilt too!

  3. That is just fabulous!! I have seen this building...and Carson-Pirie-Scott is certainly a familiar name to me and my youth! I grew up in Central-West Illinois and CPS was kind of the Macy's of Illinois to me!! Wonderful stitching!!

  6. It saddens me too Chris that we won't see this style again, thankfully some are being restored. You have done a great job with this.
