Song Bird - Fleur Maddern

My Song Bird challenge is an Australian bird the Kookaburra.
The song it represents is Kookaburra Sits In the Old Gum Tree

The design I used on this quilt was inspired by the fabric that has been used for the binding.
This shows the kookaburra before stitching
Part of this challenge was to work in a style, colour palette or medium you don’t normally use.
To fulfill this part of the challenge I did all the stitching on my Long-Arm quilting machine, including adding the binding strips. Usually I do these challenges on my domestic sewing machine.
I did all stitching on this project on a long-arm quilting machine

I even added the binding strips on the long-arm.
I used only black or beige thread in the bobbin which created a pleasing result on the back of the quilt too.

I used this 2 sided technique again on my Monochromatic #3 challenge.

  2. very cool! The finished bird is lovely but the bird before the threadwork is cool too! Kind of "Charley Harper-ish!"

  8. Good job! He looks like a little tickster ... great use of colour and texture.
I love the name 'Kokkaburra' It makes me think of a naughty bird.
I do most of my pieces on my long arm, but have never tried binding.
