I've wanted to create a Mandrake Root for ages, and this challenge gave me the ideal opportunity to do so.
I started first with his branches, winding roughly torn fabric around thin wire to enable me be able to bend them. I then attached leaves to them.
The mandrake himself was next. He's made from 3 layers of fabric. I attached two together first, drawing him with free motion on my machine, padded from the back his features such as eyebrows lips etc. Then stitched him to the third layer and then padded the whole of him. Finally painting him. When dry I cut around him ready to attach him to his background quilt.
Next I prepared the background fabric. I quilted three layers together, appliquing back ground leaves and drawing with my sewing machine the smaller roots playing behind the main one. They were then painted too.
Once happy with the background I attached the Mandrake, adding his branches as I did and adding threads to his feet for his roots. Put the binding on, added some seed stitches as quilting and small pebble like beads to indicate ground. I've really enjoyed making this quilt. I set myself some real challenges and used techniques new to me. Hope you like him. Mr Texture.

This quilt has a lot of whimsy and the texture element in the roots are great-I want to touch it!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Laurie. They are very tactile arnt they.
DeleteIf this isn't the cutist bit of texture ever. Imagination gone wild. I wish I could have been in your head all the while you were working on your mandrake. Smiling.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marty, my head is sometimes in the oddest of places. Lol
DeleteThis makes me so happy I can't even begin to tell you. Love yor subject and how you created him. Now I want to go read my Harry Potter books again.

ReplyDeleteHe is just so cute, nearly as cute as the junior versions in the background. Thanks for making me smile.
ReplyDeleteThis is great! And a new one on me...I am going to have to look up Mandrake to see what it is all about! Great texture!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I loved the books and you are spot on with your Mandrakes! Very cool!
ReplyDeleteHe really is Mr. Texture!!! How cool!!!
ReplyDeleteYou have made an amazing piece of art. Its sort of creepy but gorgeous too. Must admit, having not read or seen any Harry Potter I had to google Mandrake to understand what this was about. I like reading the process and am gobsmacked at what you have done. Quirky and weird and clever.
ReplyDeleteThanks eveyone. I really enjoyed making him.
ReplyDeleteGreat "Texture" quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhen I look at this I can hear the Mandrake screaming (because he is out of the ground!)
There is so much going on in this little quilt - fantastic texture, really interesting - great job Judith.
I could repeat all the comments above, the more I look the more I see. Wonderful quilt.
