Mosaic – Nicki Ferland – “Elemental Mountainscape”

I was under the weather during this challenge period, and wasn’t able to complete the quilt for the reveal date. I finally picked it up again this week and finished the quilt top. Better late than never!

Now that I’ve fused the pieces down (I used Lite Steam-A-Seam), I’m stumped about how to quilt it. Should I quilt each piece individually about 1/8 inch from the edge? Should I use quilting to add detail and enhance the design? Should I throw a sheet of tulle on top and quilt some lines over it? I’m open to ideas and suggestions – otherwise it may live on my design wall for several more months before I work up the courage to quilt it.

I was fairly nervous about using too-small pieces, so my mosaic is formed from 1-inch squares (sky) and ½ inch strips of varying length (sea), with some larger elements added. I really like the result. Next time, I’ll try smaller pieces with more variation in colour.

  1. Suggestion from vivian … place clear plastic/ glass over your piece. Use a pen to draw quilting lines. Take photo and do a second or third, or more …. The best one will stand out!

  2. Great suggestion! I have a vinyl sheet for this very purpose but didn't even consider it!
