This theme was challenging. I’m not much of an abstract artist; I use quilts to tell stories, adding layers of meaning in the layers of fabric. I couldn’t quite find a jumping off point for this quilt, so I roughly drew a small section of a river that runs through my city. I tried out several background fabrics, and liked this one best for its colourful intensity – something I’d be scared to use under normal circumstances. I added circles made of the same background fabric, wrong side up. It reminded me of something you find under a microscope.
