What Do You Want To Say? -Debra Konen - "Not Seen"
This was a fun theme to work on for me. I knew when I heard that it was what do I want to say, I knew I wanted to say it in Braille.
"The most beautiful things in life are not seen, but felt only by our heart."
This is written in braille in the lower right corner, using seed beads that I hand stitched on.
The heart on the right is done with reverse applique. I layered the fabrics, free motion stitched the hearts, then cut away the layers to reveal the layers underneath. The circles are free motion stitched on also. This section says I "heart" U. The I and U are in braille. I choose this technique because it makes the hearts very tactile to the touch.
The upper right corner represents being blind/visually impaired. A blind/visually impaired person can not see the world clearly or at all, so they experience the world with their heart!!! I created the eye by free-motion stitching and covered it with a heart of tulle.
This quilt was made for my granddaughter, Emberly, who was born blind and is 2 1/2 years old. She is helping her Nana "see" the world in a whole new way....with my heart!!!!

Great way to honor your grand daughter. I taught many students who had vision challenges ... they each taught me about a different way to see!
ReplyDeleteLove the texture and the story.
ReplyDeleteGreat texture and a clever idea using braille. Your quilt is ideal to be 'seen' by those with vision impairment.
