The Eyes have it - Tina Katwal - "Those Eyes"

My piece for this challenge is my version of 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's oil painting 'Girl with the pearl earring'. I love that painting and have always found myself drawn to the eyes wondering what secrets they hold. Is that deep longing in her eyes, or is it the pain of unspoken truths and half-lies? Is it a look pregnant with meaning or are the eyes begging for meaning?

I came across a black and white version of the painting on the internet and what struck me was that even when the painting was shorn of all its colours, the eyes were still as captivating as ever ! That tempted me to experiment and see if the eyes would retain their intensity even if I completely changed its style. I did the unthinkable and made the classic painting in pop colours and removed most of its details!

But 'Those Eyes'!! They still hold my gaze, no matter which angle I look at them from ! What do you think ? Think you can decipher what they say?

I used a combination of applique and reverse applique techniques to do this quilt.

  1. Beautiful Tina. 17th century meets Andy Warhol. And, she does look at you from every angle. Love it !

  2. How cool! I attempted a thread painting once of "The Girl with the Pearl Earring" - it is still not finished! What a unique approach to a classic. It really works! Bravo! Did you see the movie on Netflix??? Might give you an idea as to what she was thinking! LOL.

  7. I love the painting and the book. Somewhere I have a picture of how a student class made this painting with just coloured paper squares. I will send you that. Even there the eyes hold! My original idea was to do reverse applique; I even took a crafty class on it, but then time and travel got in the way. I would still like to do an eye with reverse applique though.
Your version is so much fun.

  8. The eyes are very strong, and you have been brave with the colours, but it works for me!
