Kitsch - Allison Haggarty - "A square peg in a round hole"

Kitsch is often thought of as "bad taste" or "tacky".  But perhaps another way of looking at it is as style that doesn't fit the criteria of another group. It's all relative.  Kitsch in the right place is great fun!

I took this view and made a flashy "square peg"  that doesn't fit into the "round hole" of  business attire.

The black background and grey hole are made of wool suiting.  The square is from a recycled shiny red polkadot tie (kitsch in its own right?).    I added a bow with a rhinestone heart and some flashy buttons (can you tell I'm a bit of a packrat for collecting odds and ends?).   Beads were added for a bit of extra bling.  I had lots of glittery bits left over so will store them away for another day.

It's hard to catch the flash of the buttons and beads in a picture.  Here's a closeup that might help.

  1. Nice interpretation of the challenge Allison. The sparkles and glitz certainly make for "kitschy" suit. Love the contrast with the wool suiting.

  2. I like your use of non-traditional fabrics and the bling is very kitschy!
