Kitsch Challenge by Serena Greene

A simple offering this time around. When the challenge theme of 'Kitsch' was announced I must admit I was worried and way outside of my comfort zone. Loud and tacky are generally things I try to avoid in my art. I reminded myself I am here to stretch myself and grow my practice and this is what I came up with.  

So my initial concept was for a vintage / retro type living room. In my head my living room kept filling up with all sorts of kitschy oddments and I was not sure how I would fit all of these furnishings into a A3 format. I expressed my exasperation to my husband on several occasions and then one night he replied matter-of-factly - ducks. 

Remember those ceramic flying ducks that everyone had on their living room walls once upon a time?  Well, they are the inspiration for my quilt this time. I considered briefly an accurate rendering but decided I would like my ducks to be bright and fun and varied from each other. I used the brightest colours from my stash for the silhouettes and added aviator scarves in black because they weren't quite fabulous enough. I used vliesofix to fuse the ducks to the background and quilted in close straight lines (because I wanted to play with my new border guide foot given to me by my brother and his wife). And here it is. Hope you like it.
