I've sought inspiration from this book for so many art projects for so long it's quite raggedy! Thankyou Neville W Cayley for your beautifully illustrated book of australian birdlife, "What bird is that?".
My kookaburra picture started by dyeing and salt treating calico, the tree is made from a collage of different fabrics, then quilted for the texture. The kookaburra itself is made fom a collage of fabrics, the upper wings are velvet, the belly is feathery fabric, (left over from costume making) and the beak is leather. The bird is then quilted to show the feather texture and detail, and the background quilted with gumleaves. I love experimenting with different fabrics and really enjoyed this challenge.

That sounds like a great book to have on hand! We have a number of North American bird and critter books that we use all the time when something interesting comes by the window, but it would be so much fun to read through the pages of a book from another area! I love your quilt and specifically the quilting in the background as well as the wonderful texture on the tree. Great job.

ReplyDeleteKookaburras are my son's favourite bird, one day I'm going to make him a full size quilt featuring kookaburras, so your quilt is reference and inspiration.
I love this quilt. I can almost hear him in the tree. Great texture and colours. One day i will see and hear a Kookaburra for myself.

ReplyDeleteMy favourite bird and yours looks so cute. I love their sound and we have many in the trees across from my sewing room. We also have a raggy version of that book and it gets used quite often. Love your free motion gum leaves in the background as well
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that bird....well, not until I saw him here in your post. I keep a bird book of birds indigenous to our area that gives me their pictures, habits, how they nest, what they feed on, etc. Makes my limited bird-watching fun. Beautiful execution of a beautiful bird.
