My Favourite Book Is... - Robyn - "Steam and Bubbles"

I don't have one favourite book so I've chosen a book which my granddaughters like me reading to them. It is called
"Marmaduke Duck and The Marmalade Jam", written by Juliette MacIver and illustrated by Sarah Davis.

The jar of marmalade was made by cutting up pieces of yellow and orange fabric and placing them, along with a few strands of angelina fibres, on a grey fabric overlaid with fine black tulle. This was then stitched with an angular meander stitch and the jar was cut using a paper template. I then cut out some webbed feet. The background fabric was chosen for no other reason than I liked it. The jar was stitched on and the feet fused and stitched.
At this point I came to a standstill because I really couldn't think of a way to quilt this quilt. Eventually I just followed some of the lines that were in the background fabric and ended up with a poor rendition of the flame quilting design. Before long I decided that I didn't want to do this over the whole quilt so I added some large segmented circles to represent citrus slices. The two designs in isolation were OK but they needed something to tie them together... a simple meander might have worked but I love the look of pebbles and so the quilting became the boiling, bubbling pan of marmalade. The quilt  has a simple binding, same fabric as the background. I usually free motion quilt with the feed dogs down, it wasn't until I was putting the binding on that I realised I had forgotten to drop them. Just goes to show you can free motion with the dogs up or down.

  1. The pebbles were the perfect choice! (as was the pretty variegated thread) The colors you used in the whole piece are wonderful and vibrant.

  2. This is fantastic Robyn! Love your jar of mamalade. The background quilting is wonderful. Good thing you told us what the webbed feet were - they had me a bit tricked! What other reason is there for choosing background fabric? I like it too.
