My Favorite Book Is... - Andrea Dodds

There are so many books that I love and consider my "favorite", but I struggled to land on one that I could actually translate into a quilt. I ended up selecting Anita Diamant's novel The Red Tent. I landed on this one because the idea of the red tent is focused on the divine feminine and the power that happens when women come together and support one another...plus I easily imagined what I would produce.

I wanted to depict the vastness of the desert, the location for the novel, and then have a single red tent. I tried to show the different wind patterns in the sand with the quilting and added some gold thread on the red tent to show the lushness of the tent where women can be themselves and supported by one another.

This challenge was really difficult for me because there were so many other books that I wanted to do...who knows, maybe I'll just do a whole series of book inspired quilts!

  4. How perfectly interpreted. I love the aloneness of your tent in the vast world outside. It represents protection, solace, caring, understanding....and the list goes on. I love it.

  7. The use of solids enhances the quilting giving a lovely textural feel to your quilt. Although small, the red tent retains its dominant place in the story. Well done.
