I've been enjoying the work of Sarah Symes for quite some time. I love the way she takes a picture for her inspiration then creates the likeness using clippings of fabric that she stitches in place. She finishes her project by wrapping it on stretcher bars which gives the finished art the appearance of a painted canvas. Beautiful. There's more to it than that of course, but she makes the process so appealing that I had to give it a try.
My inspiration photo was taken at Perdido Keys Florida this summer. As we topped the high bridge going into the community, I glanced down to a village of colorful beach condos. The darkness of the sky and the green foliage wrapping around the condos just seemed to make each one smile all the more.
Yes, the binding isn't on yet.....I thought I had one more day! I'll probably go back in and add windows and perhaps some of the little roof parapets as time allows.
Snippets of the process - sky with random stitches and threads to add texture.
