When I was a kid I spent much of my time playing in the garden with my brothers and sister. We didn't have a TV until I was about 6 or 7 and almost all of the shows that were on then were from America. Our favourite programs were the westerns so it was only natural that we played "Cowboys and Indians" in the garden. Even though I had an Annie Oakley cowgirl suit (still have it, but it no longer fits me :-)), I did like to be an Indian. We used to make Indian headdresses from corrugated cardboard and feathers, usually from the chooks. These days I collect any interesting feathers from around my garden so it seemed natural to use feathers as inspiration for this quilt. Initially I was going to stitch some feathers but out of the blue came the thought of making an Indian headdress. I made the "corrugated cardboard" from fabric and simply inserted some of the feathers I have collected. I love looking at the variety of leaves around our yard and remembered a piece of sun-dyed fabric I had made, a reject from another project. I quilted some gum leaves and some fern-like shapes onto the background and then stitched the headdress on.

If you look closely you can see the wiley fox I have quilted, hiding amongst the feathers. I is a most unwelcome visitor to my garden. He comes early morning or late evening and sneaks up on the birds and leaves no sign other than a pile of feathers that he has been. |

My inspiration for this quilt - leaves from the eucalyptus fastigata which is a predominant tree in my garden and feathers from Kookaburra, King Parrot, Crimson Rosella and Magpie. |
Oh, Robyn, what a wonderful idea. You are definitely out there finding things in the garden. Oh, yes, I do see the stitched in sly fox. A nice free-motion quilting touch.
ReplyDeleteGreat piece full of memories and movement and all the joy of childhood days. I just love it...even that nasty sneaky fox!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea/piece!!!! And what a memory it will hold for you too!!!! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI can remember my girls collecting feathers, leaves and rocks. Indian headpieces were on of the things they made. I love the stitching your background fabric and stitching.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! And a terrific way to show off your feather collection!
ReplyDeleteLovely quilt Robyn. Fantastic background quilting, love the vibrant colour and the interesting feathers, leaves and the fox hidden there.
ReplyDeleteGreat collection of feathers Robyn, love the collection of leaves and feathers in the pic as well. Great idea to make a headdress. I am so jealous of your Annie Oakley outfit. I had 4 older brothers growing up and they got Hopalong Cassidy hats and guns and all I got were dolls. I still think I was emotionally scared from that ha ha.
ReplyDeleteNever mind Denise, you can borrow my Annie Oakley suit anytime. I have 2 brothers and a sister and we 2 girls always played with "boy" toys. Loved my matchbox cars and playing footy.
DeleteWhat a different collection of leaves you have than my own! Love that this group is from around the world! Beautiful Garden quilt! The quilting is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThanks all for your comments and encouragement. Btw, the leaves are all from the same tree. While our native trees aren't deciduous, the old leaves make way for the new continually so they actually do have all the beautiful autumnal colours, just not all at once so its not so noticeable.
ReplyDeleteLove this, especially the background quilting and the way you've attached the leaves. I can imagine this framed and on the wall!
ReplyDeleteRobyn, I love this. Especially the memories it invokes.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting idea.
