Here is my entry in the "In the Garden" Challenge due March 31, 2015. I thought this would be an easy challenge since I garden but my Zone 4 garden is nowhere to be seen as in the third photo take today!!
I resorted to photos of my garden and found the photo of a mosaic stained glass stepping stone my BF made me in 2006 based on my drawing of a woman with blue skin and sun rays around her head. It sits in a flower bed near my side house door with other color coordinated garden art and lots of colorful flowers. I used a mosaic style placement of the applique pieces where nothing touches anything else or overlaps. This way the fabric "grout" can pop through the mosaic pieces. This is an OKAY technique but I do not like to start and stop the stitching around each piece instead of continuing on as I normally do. This approach takes longer and uses more thread but to get the mosaic garden art look it was necessary.
I did very little of my normal embellishing because it is garden art intended for outside but I couldn't resist and added red glitter nail polish to the lips and purple glitter nail polish to the eyelids!
The next challenge is due May 31, 2015 and is called "Out of This World." I envision an alien invasion!!
This is the actual stepping stone based on my original drawing.
My lovely brown garden March 31, 2015. Too early to get excited in Zone 4!! Some years there is plenty of snow still in the flower beds in late April so this view is great!!
A file photo of my garden on May 31 one year nice and green and ready for color and warmth!!

Oh, what a difference a season makes in the garden! Your stepping stone was the perfect inspiration for the challenge. Great look your garden nympth has going for her.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how you would incorporate your 'portrait style' into this garden challenge and you have done it so well. Your stepping stone lady definitely fits the bill.
ReplyDeleteHow creative are you, and you have time to garden, I in awe.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to use the stepping stone! (and it is wonderful to see the before/after of your garden too...I'm always amazed at how what looks to be all brown and dead returns each year to beautiful color.)
ReplyDeletevery striking
ReplyDeleteI love the way you can get your ladies in there no matter what the topic!! She is lovely...what a great interpretation from your mosaic!
ReplyDeleteAs I said on FB...she is WONDERFUL!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove your inspiration and the result.
ReplyDeleteGreat rendition of your garden paver (stepping stone) in fabric.
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me I have a couple of very nice mosaic pavers in my garden too, they would make great quilts.
Thanks for the inspiration Laurie.
Oh my, what a difference in your garden. I think we are spoiled in Australia as there is something flowering all year round. I love your mosaic idea and looks just great.
ReplyDeleteVery cool garden quilt! Just lovely and colorful!
ReplyDeleteNice work Laurie. It reminds me of Rachael Slorach's Ken Done inspired design (a famous Aussie painter) in the AQC 'True Blue' competition this year.
