Here is my "In The Garden" quilt, a scaled down version of the Easy Bargello Landscape quilts I have been teaching lately at the shop.
Many years ago we had a wild Emu that lived quite happily in our front paddock,
just over the fence from the garden. I would see him watching me hang the washing.
To create this quilt I choose 5 fabrics with small scale prints that represented my Australian farm garden.
Blue sky, gum leaves, emus, green grass & Australian wildflowers.
Joined the strips together horizontally and then counter cut vertically,
shifted each strip up or down a little and re-sewed.
A requirement of this challenge was to include a 3D element.
I have created 2 different 3D elements.
3D 1: I used 'shrinky' fabric under some leaves,
stitched and steamed them and inserted them into the seam
between the sky fabric and the leaves fabric.

3D 2: I trapuntoed the tree trunk, a few of the leaves,
1 of the Emus and a couple of Emu chicks

Every one of my Art Quilts made for this group has a different edge treatment / finish.
(This is a self-imposed challenge).
The edges of this quilt are turned over a narrow rope to create a neat edge,
the back was covered with another piece of fabric (not shown).

Love your quilt Fleur what a great technique and the binding is so different.
ReplyDeleteThanks Chris, This Easy Bargello technique is certainly that - easy!
DeleteOh, what a perfect project for a Bargello. Love it. Thanks for the rope binding idea.....a must try.
ReplyDeleteYes just needed to scale done the print on the fabrics used and it worked very nicely.
DeleteIt is always fun to see what you come up with! And I agree with the others, the rope in the binding really makes the edge pop!
ReplyDeleteThanks Monique, I was pleased with the way the rope binding turned out.
DeleteWow, love what you have done here Fleur. A true Aussie garden.
ReplyDeleteThanks Robyn, I was careful to select Australian themed fabrics for my 'Garden'.
DeleteI was attacked by an emu once, haven't really been fond of them since then but I love what you have done with your quilt.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sue, Emus in public places like parks and picnic grounds can be very aggressive especially if there is food involved. I remember seeing an Emu steal a sandwich from my Great Aunty as she was about to bite into it, the Emu snatched it from between her teeth and her hand, an experience like that can be a little terrifying! Wild emus however do not come near people.
DeleteLovely! And thanks for the binding technique. I will have to try it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jay, you're welcome. I'm always looking for new / different binding techniques, please share any you find / try.
DeleteOh, I love this little quilt Fleur, the bargello just takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary.
ReplyDeleteThanks Denise.
DeleteAnother technique to try - the corded binding! Looks great! The whole piece turned out quite nice. Always like a bargello!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Lizz to try the rope binding technique, it really was quite easy. I need more ideas for bindings / finishes - share any you have tried please.
ReplyDeleteLove the 3D!
ReplyDeleteHaving to do 3D made me laugh - most of my art quilts have a 3D element!
