Thumbs - Laurie Ceesay Landree - "Thumbelina"

This is my entry in the Thumbs Challenge. It was a difficult challenge because I knew what I didn’t want but not sure what to actually do. I remembered the Hans Christian Andersen children’s book Thumbelina about a make believe miniature woman who lives amongst flowers and critters. I assume she was the size of the thumb. There was a song my daughter and I used to sing and we’d move our thumbs around like they were dancing.
To me my goal was to have things in proportion-a tiny woman figure living on a very large scale flower. I went through my large scale fabric stash for the biggest flowers and I found a butterfly also. I fussy cut and fused these flowers to the background. Then I found the little 2” preprinted woman. I placed her as if she was standing on the pedals of the flower.
I added a tiny green iridescent skirt, some little flowers in her hair and the rest of her got glittered! Nothing else was embellished to draw attention to Thumbelina.

  1. Snap! Great minds think alike. I love the oversized flowers and your wee Thumbelina figure is very cute. That sky blue backing fabric is super pretty.

  4. The flowers you found were perfect the scale really worked. The colors are beautiful. Good idea to only embellish Thumbelina.
