Thumbs - Gem Homan - "Thumbelina, Loving Hands"

'Thumbs' - 'Thumbelina, Loving Hands'
Hans Christian Anderson's story 'Thumbelina' begins with a poor woman who desperately wants a child. She visits a witch who gives her a seed. The woman plants the seed and tends the plant with loving hands. A beautiful tulip grows and when the flower blooms, the woman finds a tiny little girl inside, no bigger than her thumb. She calls her Thumbelina. I was inspired to create this quilt because I received a beautiful bouquet of tulips for my birthday. I also recently made some curtains for our living room that has a fresh tulip print. I used some of the left over fabric on my quilt as part of the flower and the backing fabric.

  1. I love the movement of the hands with the emphasis of the thumbs. Even Thumbelina is showing us her thumb!!!!

  2. I love how you really showcased the thumbs in your piece not only with the hands, but Thumbelina's thumb as well. Great job.
