Thumbs - Deepa Vasudevan - "Thumbs Up!"

A bit literal- this is...:)

So much has changed the way we communicate. In school, I never imagined a world where we would be using funny images and numbers and arithmetical operators to express how we feel.

The thumbs up sign has become the ubiquitous sign for approval worldwide. For me, it definitely is one of the most frequently used emoticon.

Although, sometimes, I do wonder how symbols can vary across cultures. I grew up in what we in India call the "Hindi belt". And the thumbs up sign had a very different meaning. It meant "Tenga" - a cute way to say "s**k it up, loser!" and it undoubtedly cracks me up!

I have used Yellow applique for the thumb and used a black and white background fabric to pop up the yellow applique. Used a little free motion quilting for the thumbs up applique.
I then made quilted yellow circles in the background fabric to denote the world of emoticons.

  1. How true that the 'like' symbol we see on social media has different meanings in other cultures. I like how the yellow of your hand 'pops' against the background.

  2. Great idea for the thumb theme. I use that symbol a lot in response to texts on my phone. Love the background and the subtle yellow circles of emoticons.

  3. Great theme, so true for today! I like the background fabrics you used, they remind me of looking at various newspapers or other media. Interesting comment about the other meanings of the thumbs up symbol.
