Song Bird - Laurie Ceesay Landree - "Free Bird"

The challenge theme due November 30, 2019 is titled Song Bird.
I have already created a few challenge projects with birds (Flight of Fancy a few years ago) and I wasn't too excited about it.
I was watching an old movie Con-Air on TV and the US Southern Rock band Lynyrd Stynyrd was playing in the background.
I suddenly thought of their song free bird (which I love!) and the idea came to me.
I thought of birds clustered together not being free to fly.
I saw symbolism of our emotions and not being free to express our feelings. As time goes on and our bad emotions are released the birds get to fly away. Lots of symbolism.
I clustered the birds close together and they form a female face/head profile as in a silhouette/side view image.
I chose rainbow colors because they are my favorites plus they could represent the gay community and their quest for freedom from oppression.
I Googled bird clip art then made a copy of the birds as a pattern for raw edged fused applique. I started with pink birds on the left because its my favorite color and ended with red. There was an especially large bird in the clip art mix and I used it only in the blue, yellow and red birds since they are the primary colors. I cut out 89 birds plus a wing only for the eyelashes. I chose black over white for the background because I thought the birds stood out more. It seemed busy enough and I added no embellishments.
Not really my style but it came together well enough.

  1. Another stunning piece from you Laurie. I didn't notice the face at first. That's a lot of bird appliques ! I love that it represents LGBTQ.

  3. Brilliant! I was wondering how you were going to do a portrait with this challenge - and look how beautifully your birds 'rise' to the occassion

Sometimes we need to be pushed out of our comfort zones.

  6. Love the symbolism throughout your piece - the colours linking to the gay community is very relevant in Australia at this time.
