Song Bird - Gem Homan - "Blackbird"

Song Bird - 'Blackbird'
This is from the Beatles song 'Blackbird'.
A beautiful song that expresses the hope to be free.
Blackbird
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night
Blackbird fly, blackbird fly
Into the light of a dark black night
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

This song reminds me of a few years ago when I was in a situation that I felt trapped in. I couldn't see a way out, but then an opportunity arose and I was able to 'fly free'.

In this quilt I used a colour palette I seldom work with - monochromatic.
I also don't usually do machine embroidery which I gave a try with the leaves behind the bird. I
also don't normally write on my quilts, but I found an indelible ink pen that was perfect for writing some of the lyrics of the song.

This wasn't the first idea I had for the challenge. I wanted to make an embroidered bird and use the Lynyrd Skynyrd song 'Freebird' as inspiration. Sadly, my spare time is limited, so I put that one on the WIP pile.

  3. A great place to experiment with your individual leaves and trial a few different techniques.

  4. I'm a fan of the leaf motifs in the background and the monochromatic color scheme.

    1. I love using my stash of Chitenge fabric. Monochromatic is not usually printed in this fabric design

    1. Glad you like it. I was also contemplating using the Beatles number 'Free as a Bird' which was released post John's passing
