Nursery Rhymes - Jacomina de Regt - "Berend Botje"

Nursery Rhymes - Jacomina de Regt - "Berend Botje"

I wanted to use a nursery rhyme that all Dutch children grow up with.

Berend Botje ging uit varen,
met zijn scheepje naar Zuid-Laren.
De weg was recht, de weg was krom,
Nooit kwam Berend Botje weerom.

It is a song about a man, named Berend Botje, who goes away on his boat/ship, the road was straight, the road was crooked and never did he return.

I picked this song because there is a lot of historical information on the song and there is a statue of him in Zuid-Laren.

The history of the song clearly indicates that the young sailor man is a rather hopeless, hapless person, and there are many versions in both German and many Dutch dialects about that kind of a young man.

So, I imagined his mother sending him away, pointing him towards the boat and shouting at him to "go to Zuid-Laren", like, "just get out of here and go far away... ".
You can see the sound waves from her loud voice.

and you see him go to his boat, and sail away in the distance..

I made it look like a Delft's blue tile to fit with the Dutch historical theme.

I made the hand based on techniques taught by Susan Carlson and described in her book Serendipity Quilts, just to challenge myself to do something I had never done before.
Serendipity always plays a large role in my life and a friend of mine dropped off tule just as I was reading the Susan Carlson book.

Here are the detailed pictures :
