It has been quite a while since I have had to exercise my brain and creativity to the extent I did for this first project. I hope all of you find that I have done the subject matter justice. As you may recall - there was a point I abhorred my work on this piece. But as projects often do (we hope), there was a positive turning point and now I love it. Perhaps one of my favorite art quilts ever.
The most remarkable eyes I find in all of nature are the eyes of an owl. Of course I love owls in general - but their eyes are so strong. They see all! They discern all! They act with due diligence - always. Did you know the owl has no known natural predator? One of the reasons I love owls. I also love they can turn their heads 270 degrees! Nothing sneaks up on an owl!
I eventually decided to give my owl a book and an eye piece. I wasn't sure I made the right decision until it all came together. I decided my owl should be reading the book Poppy by Avi. Have you read the book? I had to read it while working on my B.S. in Elementary Education. The theme of Poppy truly resonated with me. The protagonist is a Horned Owl - hence the questioning look of my owl while he consumes page after page portraying him as a tyrant!! No hurt feelings Mr. Owl....Poppy is just a work of fiction.
Any hoooo....lol....Mr. Owl is comprised of raw edged cotton fabric applique and stitched with 100% cotton thread. Thread painting is also completed with cotton thread. I hope you like it!!

ReplyDelete:) You will see I have a rather childish outlook on most topics! LOL
DeleteYour choices of materials really make this owl come alive. I agree I could see him in a child's book. Great job.
