The Eyes Have It - Laurie Ceesay - "Mariama"

When Robbie gave the name of this challenge I was thinking this is easy because I prefer portrait quilts and I put eyes on all of my projects. I got out all my former quilt challenges and really looked at them and realized I have not used yellow in any of my projects. So by selecting yellow and wanting to have a woman of color as my portrait this got me started.
I found a tribal like image on Pinterest and ran with that with lots of ornamentation. I used several sizes of rhinestones, glitter nail polish, tiny nail art beads, fabric paint, Inktense pencils and hand tacked black bouche yarn to enhance the Afro hairstyle. I had a tribal looking fabric in my stash suitable for the background which continued the theme. I used 5 gradations of hand dyed browns from Cherrywood Fabrics for the skin tones because they are just perfect-beautiful tactile feel and I don't have to match any values because their dying process has done it for me!
My ex-husband is African (Gambian) and his mother is named Mariama and that is what I titled this quilt.
This photo is of the eye details. Lots of bling!!
Mouth details with Inktense pencils and white fabric paint.

  6. Beautiful. The June/July issue of Quilting Arts has an article on "eyes"; they could have you do a similar article.
