"Kitsch Cushion"

Well here it is, my Kitsch piece. Man it is so ugly it makes me laugh.
Back in the day( don't know if anyone else in the world outside Australia had these) about the late 50's or 60's I think, for some reason people thought these were really great to have a set ( yep, I said set) inside the back window of the car.
They were mostly black velvet ( I only had maroon) with a touristy name written on them. Australia or Sydney were what we had around here mostly. The words and images were written in glitter and they usually had a yellow or gold fringe around them, sometimes baubles. If only you could see the beautiful glitter I put on this and how it sparkles in the light.
Quite often in between then there would be a nodding head dog facing out the back.
Now, do you have a visual, can you imagine driving up behind them at the traffic lights. They were bad taste even then so it has to be KITSCH.
Definitely kitsch. I had a brief thought of velvet pictures but don't have any velvet so the thought passed very quickly.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is so kitshcy I love it!! Velvet pictures were very popular in the 50s and 60s-the States had Velvet Elvis pictures!! Very tacky!! The yellow pom pom trim really makes it!!
ReplyDeleteIt was a fun quilt to make even though my husband and I had a big laugh about it.
DeleteI vaguely recall velvet pictures, my family were more the souvenir teaspoons type. Your harbour scene is great, reminds me of a Ken Done painting. Glitter, velvet, fluffy ball trim - I think you nailed it.
ReplyDeleteLOL Definitely ugly!! I don't think we had anything like this in Canada for our cars....maybe an Australian specialty?
ReplyDeleteOh I remember when these were popular. Not quite sure why! But something my grandma would have purchased. Very cutely ugly!
ReplyDeleteGreat interpretation of kitsch. You gave me a journey back in time with your description.
