My Favorite Book Is... - Laurie Ceesay - "Pattern Play"

Today is reveal day for the January 31st deadline of the "My Favorite Book Is.." challenge. I could not think of a favorite novel that I wanted to convert into an art quilt. I was randomly looking through my quilt books and found my favorite book "Pattern Play" from 1993 by Doreen Speckmann. She was a quilter from Madison WI and I was exposed to her humor and love of combining prints as a member of the local Appleton WI quilt guild when I was a new quilter back in the 1990s. She created characters of two triangle shapes and named them "Peaky" and "Spike!" I was highly influenced by her style of quilting and made many quilts and wall hangings using Doreen's techniques.

Doreen passed away on one of her many quilt cruises in 1998 and many quilters felt her loss.

I used Peaky and Spike in my quilt block and some of my favorite colors. I deviated from my normal portrait quilts to honor Doreen! In 1993 Doreen taught using temples and I have converted to a paper foundation piecing for greater accuracy.
 This is the book cover.
Close up with a cute pin that is the closest I'll get to a portrait quilt in this project! I added a few red rhinestones and some decorative stitches with a rayon variegated thread playing with my new sewing machine.
Doreen autographed my book when I took one of her classes back in the 90s. I am so glad I was able to meet her and take a few of her classes. The next challenge, Folklore, is truly a challenge!!

  1. I remember Doreen and loved her. She was often on the Alex Anderson TV show years ago and was just a hoot. She would be honored, no doubt, at your beautiful interpretation of her book.

  4. What a lovely tribute. Your piece made my heart grin and encouraged me to take a moment to stop and send out thanks to all who have given me inspiration on this path as well.
