My Favorite Book Is... - Janet Hartje - "Confessions of a Bibliophile"

This was such a fun challenge!  Definitely a challenge, trying to narrow the choice to one book, and not create problems with copyright while still doing justice to the book.  After changing direction at least ten times I decided to go with the feelings behind a favorite book and how those feelings came to be.  I wrote more about my influencers on my own blog if you would like to know more about my choices.
I started with creating a pattern.

After choosing my photos I printed them on a sheet of ExtravOrganza.  I wanted it to look like an old book so I went with black and white photos.

Next I sewed the pieces together in the shape of a book.

I decided the spine of the book needed something.  I used a fabric marker to write Volume 1 along the side.

I used hearts for quilting to represent the book love.

I added the lines for the pages of the book at the bottom.  And just some stitch in the ditch for the rest.

I debated appliqué at this point but my gut told me to try a facing instead.  These photos aren't the best and I thought I took more so I hope you can see what I did.  I cut two exact shapes of my book from the facing fabric.  I cut the center from these two fabrics and sewed them right sides together around that center hole.

Carefully clip the seams and turn the facing so the wrong sides are together.  Now it is ready to sew to the book itself. Place the facing on the front of the quilt matching the edges exactly.  Sew around the entire quilt.  Carefully clip the seams and turn the facing to the back of the quilt.  Stitch in place.

And last I added a small hanging sleeve.

A book is born.

  4. Your book looks fantastic. I love it when people get creative with the shape. It's such fun to think outside the square (or rectangle) and be creative with what we do and still keep within the group rules.
