Here is a section of the fabric.
I cut out about a quarter of one of the flowers and tried my best to recreate the rest of the flower with
as much texture as possible.
as much texture as possible.
The initial square is appliquéd flat. I added padding under the leaves and petals of my recreation.
I have been wanting to try a few techniques from the book "Stumpwork."
I used their method for making the larger dark red circles. Here is the padding under the dark red circles.
I also followed their methods of creating leaves and used this for making my dragon fly wings. I added a little fabrico marker to the wings for a touch of color.
Here are the guts of my dragonfly.
Here is one covered with orange floss.
Some more photos from different angles to show the texture I added.
I encourage critiques of my work. I will not be changing this quilt as it is done and I am ready to move to a new challenge. Hopefully I can learn from a critique to improve my skills for the next little piece of art.
Thanks for taking a peek at the new skills I have been trying for this piece.

I was mesmerized as I scrolled down in search of the next phase of your creation. What a jewel you've come up with. I would love to see more of your artwork using this technique.
ReplyDeleteThank you Marty, this is a first but I do hope to make some more in the future.
ReplyDeleteLove seeing all the close up photos. This is a work I'd like to hold so I can appreciate it fully! The only thing I would add is to have a little more light on the full piece when you take the picture. Great work!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great textured piece! I too enjoyed, so much!, seeing your process pics!!! Thanks for sharing that part too. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant work!!! So much went into this tiny quilt!!! Its simply amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a stunning peice of work. I love the colours, the techniques and the texture. Well done. A wonderful work.
ReplyDeleteExcellent interpretation of the theme! The beads are great and the pedals that are trapuntoed (sp.) are nice too!!
ReplyDeleteWow! I like how you extended the flower with beads and trapunto.
ReplyDeleteIts just beautiful, the stitching, beading, dragon flies.....all of it.
ReplyDeleteWow wow wow! What a fantastic challenge!
ReplyDeleteReally love this idea - as a challenge.
Also really enjoy what you have created here Janet - so much colour, movement, texture, drama and it tells a story. Great work.
What a great way to use a favourite fabric. The techniques you have used certainly add a lot of different textures to the quilt. I would have perhaps not used the variegated thread for the quilting as I think there is enough colour in the flower itself. Good to see your process pictures.
ReplyDeleteThank you for showing this lovely quilt and the inspiration to use a few favourite pieces in my stash. I love all the hand work, beads and more beads.
