This piece has been made as a screen, two sides, the back is the red, very different reds and fabrics patchwoked. The fish are embroidered shibori style onto a back ground of boro stitched small pieces of Japanese indigo coloured fabric from my stash. I glued sate sticks between the quilts, stitched a handmade cord on the edge and glued painted beads to the end of the sticks. All very easy and enjoyable but time consuming,

Christine...what a cool piece!! But give us more explanation please!! Love to have you share the inspiration for it!!
ReplyDeleteLove that it is free-standing! What a great idea :) And the fish are fantastic too!
ReplyDeleteIs it shibori stitching? What a beautiful piece filled with so many background fabrics, each adding to the feeling of even more depth and texture.
ReplyDeleteSorry Marty I have been away and was not sure how to edit but yes it is shirobori but I have added boro and free motion machine stitching, just twicking it a little. Thanks for your comments.
DeleteSorry not shibori it is sashiko. I always get the name for dyeing confused with the stitching.
DeleteAwesome idea to make it free standing!!! Love it, Christine!
ReplyDeleteThis is so different. I just love everything about it, esp the hand stitched little fishes. Great work.
ReplyDeleteThis a a quilt that makes me stop and admire it for a length of time trying to figure out what is all going on!! Is it reversible?
ReplyDeleteYes it is reversible and it folds up and is easy to store.
DeleteHow did you make it stand up? That is a great way to add interest to a piece. Very nice!
ReplyDeleteYour piece reminds me of the screens ladies used to protect their complexion from the heat of the open fires in the olden days. I love that it is free standing and can be veiwed from either side.
ReplyDeleteVery nice....love the two-sided work...very creative!
ReplyDeleteFantastic - texture of fabric and texture of stitch.
ReplyDeletePlus a really interesting idea to make your quilt free standing.
Surprise!!
