This is my entry for the 'Uniform' challenge!!!
Yup, that's 96 squares of 4 different colours randomly pieced together!
So how does it say 'uniform'?
Before you start wondering, let me get our my wand and cast a spell on this one! (wand = mouse & spell = desaturate)
And here it is!!!
Uniform!!!
The inspiration came when I was playing with a few filters on my iPhone camera. I wanted to use fabrics of different colours that have the 'uniform' value!
It wasn't as simple as it looks!
Firstly, I had to get ALL my solid fabric on my table. Then look at them through my camera with the 'mono' filter on and move them around Do you know how hard it is to pick up the right fabric from a pile when you're not looking at it directly? till I was satisfied with a pile. Then I cut them into pieces and pieced them!
Attempt 1 : It was all fine till I finished my quilt top! And then suddenly when I used the filter, it showed up as different shades!!! Bummer!
Attempt 2 : I was out of enough fabrics at home. Really! A wall full of fabric and I had NOTHING to work with! so I went to the store to buy. Once again, I was looking at those bolts through the camera. I'm very sure the shopkeeper would have informed the mental hospital had I not bought the 10 yards of fabric that I did! It was a complete nightmare! The solid poplis are stored in a corner on the first floor, so I had to walk up a narrow staircase and to the end of the badly lit shop, choose the fabrics and walk down the same way into clear sunlight to check! I managed to pick up a bunch of colours. I also burned quite a few calories in the process! I came home and made the quilt top! But again, it looked pretty different when I put it together! Bummer again!
Attempt 3 : I decided to use a woven local fabric called 'Khan'. It is the regional traditional fabric that women in Maharashtra (my state) made blouses from. Once again, the shopkeeper looked at me like I was going insane while I looked through my phone camera and selected 4 colours! Back home and once again, one of them decides it wants to look different! By this time, I was on the verge of giving up! But I decided to give it one more go. Mostly because I had no other idea to work with. I never had a plan B!
Attempt 4 : I selected lesser number of fabrics this time. I went to a different store to buy them. I dont think I would have managed another trip without my family being informed. This time, I checked at each stage! Just to make sure I had it right! And I did it.
I still wished it did not have that 'very' little difference that it does only on my iPhone. It looks fine on my laptop. But I'm guessing thats more because of the screen rather than my ability!
So here's the story of my Uniform quilt!!!
It was a lot of fun making this one!!!
You have inspired me. I have just heard of fabric values. I love this. Utterly fascinating. Just seen Eileen Roche's new York Beauty Quilt using black and white values. Since seeing your work just might try it. Can't stop thinking about values. You have so inspired me! Very cleeeeveeer. Well done Shruti.

How ingenius! I know the second picture is the same first because I checked the wrinkles. LOL!
ReplyDeleteFabulous! What a wonderful explanation of your process!
ReplyDeleteWow Shruti, I would have lost patience half way through that ( patience isn't my strong suit), the explanation took as long as making the quilt. It looks great though.
ReplyDeletePerseverance is an amazing thing. Well done.
ReplyDeleteI think you put more work into "thinking" this challenge out than the rest of us! Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteWell, thats the best excuse I've heard for having to buy more fabric :-) Your perseverance certainly paid off.
