Uniform - Laurie Ceesay - "Pop Art Princess 3"

Today is reveal day for the current challenge called "Uniform." I interpreted uniform as meaning sameness and conformity. I chose to do an Andy Warhol style portrait with four of the SAME images of a woman. This is what is UNIFORM in this quilt:
     1. The image of the woman is the same.
     2. The background and sashing is the same fabric and the same width.
     3. The stripe of the halter dress is the same and cut along the same position on the striped fabric
     4. The eye, brow and lip color is all the same.
     5. The glitter nail polish on all the eyelids is the same color.
     6. The quilting is the same in all four images, using the same variegated thread, and the sashing.

This is what is NOT uniform:
     1. The color of the hair
     2. The nail polish on each of the woman's hair.
     3. The skin tones.

This is a close up of the favorite of the four images. I decided the combination of the values of skin tone, eye brows and lips looked the best together.

This is my second favorite of the images because the woman looks serene. Even thought he pattern pieces are all the same the end results are slightly different based on fusing placement of the applique facial features and the quilting. The woman with the pink hair has too strong of an eye brow and looks severe and the black woman with the white hair hair too low of a contrast between brows and skin tone. I found this concept interesting and have used it in my lecture about value. Color can appear lighter or darker when placed next to another color and the relationship of the eye brow color to the various skin tones clearly shows this. The next challenge due November 30th is on texture which isn't really a challenge since I use a variety of textured fabrics and embellishments in my quilts on a regular basis. I purchased some yummy hand dyed velvets from a former group member, Chris Daly, in Madison WI last month and will use one of those in the next challenge. Time to continue to prep for my teaching job at the IQF Houston Show at the end of October!!

  7. I really like this! It's a great, imaginative illustration of how one size doesn't fit all.

Your explanation also shows the difficulty of portrait quilts, with the different results of the same pieces.
