I've titled this On Wednesdays We Wear Pink.
I knew that I wanted to do a version of paper dolls marching across the quilt, because my first thought was of, oddly, military formations marching through streets...maybe I've been watching too much History Channel. I also thought of Pink Floyd's The Wall.
I also knew that I wanted to have one character a different color to reflect going against the mainstream.
When I got into the studio to pull fabrics, I ended up pulling pink. As I was cutting it out, the line from the movie Mean Girls "On Wednesdays we wear pink..." popped into my head. This made my stream of consciousness thinking go off onto a different tangent that reflects the state of adolescents, that the movie discusses, about how important it is to NOT standout for so many kids in high school in order to avoid bullying (another theme of the movie) and how I wish I would have been stronger as a kid and been more willing to step out of line and felt comfortable enough to express myself.
Here is a close up of the special character.
I really enjoyed this challenge because while it didn't force me to learn a new technique, it did let me explore my own psyche.

Well spoken. Well executed. I love the message. I love the sybolism. I love your that your piece is only almost uniform.

ReplyDeleteI love this. The hair is great on your pink self
ReplyDeleteWhat they said about the meaning and symbolism. I love the look of it and think the pink figure suits it well. The straight line quilting was a perfect choice.
