Snowflake - Fleur Maddern

Snowflake

Snowflake

The Snowflake is made of white 'Ric-Rac' fused onto 'Shapemaker' (a fusable stiffener).

The design is underneath the 'Shapemaker', many pins were used to hold the 'Ric-Rac' in place for fusing.

Ric-Rac Snowflake fused to Shapemaker prior to cutting

Then I cut away the 'Shapemaker' in some of the open spaces between the 'Ric-Rac'.
This was a very time consuming job as 'Shapemaker' is quite stiff and doesn't bend, 'Ric-Rac' is tiny and curvy and the spaces in between are rather small. (What was I thinking???)

Snowflake about half way through cutting away the spaces.

Background

The background is made of 3 layers of  pink/blue sheer fabric and 1 layer of yellow/green sheer fabric fused together. I used 'Mistyfuse' and 'Vlisofix' to see if there was any difference to the look and feel after fusing.

1 pair of fabrics was fused with 'Mistyfuse', I could see the random web of glue between the layers of sheer fabric, the fabric was still quilt soft of hand and pliable.
The other pair of fabrics was fused with 'Vliesofix', the glue was visible but more even coverage without the 'web' appearance of the 'Mistyfuse', and the fabric was a little stiffer, harder (which is what I wanted in this project).
So I used 'Vliesofix' to fuse the 2 pairs together to give the extra stiffness I required. (when the 4 layers were fused together the web appearance of the 'Mistyfuse' disappeared)

Binding

Binding strips are stiffened with plastic packing strap to keep the sheer fabric background flat.

  1. Great idea and thanks for sharing your experimentation with the webs. Love the stiffening idea for the biding too - perfect result and the cutting around the ric rac was really worth it!!

    1. Thanks Neroli, I put off cutting around the ric-rac because I knew it was not going to be easy, tried to like the snowflake as a solid but in the end just had to make the cuts, and more cuts and more cuts until I was happy with it.

  2. A wonderful quilt. I love the light through the sheer fabric. Transparent like real sowflakes. Great experiments.

    1. Thanks Judith, Sometimes I find it difficult to create the idea I have in my head. I wanted a transparent snowflake that would allow light through. But how to make it transparent and let the light shine through unless the background is transparent too. This was my solution, I would have liked to add puffiness and quilting to the background but didn't know what I could use as wadding that would allow light through? Any ideas?

  4. Thanks Robbie. I like to see the process that others use when making their pieces so I try to return the same.
