Structure - can be described as anything composed of parts arranged in some way. When this challenge was announced I immediately thought of something man-made like a building, bridge etc. My next thought was some kind of plant skeleton. Soon after I found a partial animal skull on the side of the road near home so I brought it home and after soaking it in a bucket of bleach (it was pretty smelly at this stage) for a few weeks I started work.
This small piece fell out from behind the eye socket and I was amazed at the construction of multiple fragile layers. |
My quilt is based on this piece of the skull and the surrounding bones. On closer inspection I found many layers and degrees of fragility and lots of tiny holes in places. I gathered various materials, tyvek, plastic bags, net bags, tulle and some sheers that I knew would melt/distort and hit them with a heat gun. Next I arranged them on top of each other and stitched them together. Then they were stitched onto a solid black fabric.
