It's all about me! - Robbie
Yep, this is all about me! I'm a 'spring' kind of gal who loves, loves, love hand work and beading! So of course I had to include those elements in my self portrait!
BUT...I dislike drawing intensely...so this is my first and last attempt at drawing!! I used the technique of putting tracing paper on the mirror (read this in a mixed media book but I forget the name of it!!) and then tracing your face! Well, this was still no easy task!
I'm looking forward to our next challenge and I'm so happy that our 'self portrait' challenge is over with!!
I created the background piece by painting diluted fabric paints onto Radiance white fabric. Then, I scanned my portrait tracing and printed onto the painted Radiance.
After stitching the commercial fabric to the portrait I stitched around each painted area to give the appearance of patchwork.
Of course I had to add some beading around the portrait because it's all about me and my beading! and handwork!
More detail of the edge beading and handwork.
I look forward to 'meeting' everyone else through their self portraits!!!

The background fabrics are amazing - and that mirror trick is a neat one! :)
ReplyDeleteYour beading and handwork are very lovely, also the colors in the border. The drawing is a fine beginning - I wouldn't give up on it, just try it again! I wonder if you would have liked it better if you had done some of your fine hand work over the drawing? All in all it's very nice. The mirror tracing is a great idea. I've not heard of that one.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt...I think your sketch is darling! You are being 'way too hard on yourself!! I hope you will continue to draw...the "ability" to draw can improve with practice!! Not that you NEED improvement...I am one to talk! I have had to learn to love my own drawing...it is never what I want it to be!! I don't want to be preachy to you...just encouraging, I hope! Love your color scheme choice and your stitching!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I had used that idea of tracing myself in the bathroom mirror, I mean I opted out of using the photo of myself from the bathroom. Now I want a "do over" for this challenge with all of the great ideas that I've picked up from everybody!!
ReplyDeleteI think your drawing is great. Here's my challenge to you.....I double-dog dare you to keep drawing!
ReplyDeleteNot going to happy, Marty! UGH...hate, hate drawing...but i can trace with the best of them!!! That's my way!!
DeleteI agree that you're being too hard on yourself -- this was fun, and you should be proud of it. I love all the beadwork and the hand stitching, wish I had more patience to get into that stuff.
ReplyDeleteI love this piece. What great techniques. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the beaded edge! I like the idea of tracing in the mirror and then doing the stitching - that's a great idea! And, yes, you are being too hard on yourself!!
ReplyDeleteI love that you drew yourself! I think lots of us will be running to the bathroom mirror to try it!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried that technique! I think I would have a hard time getting a straight line because I would be making faces and laughing too much! But I do like how this piece turned out and I'm so glad you put in some close shots of your beading work....WOW!
ReplyDeleteI think that's a cool technique. My first thought was 'how did she do it?' so glad you shared the 'how to' !
ReplyDeleteLots of intersting elements and textures. Cool background colours with quilted texture and warmer, smoother background for the thread painting of yourself, great contrast. I like the opposed cool/warm rough/smooth aspect. And a bumby beaded edge - cool!
ReplyDeleteWho ate my comment?
ReplyDeleteI said ... Great drawing, don't stop, it just gets easier with practice!!! I know, I wrote a whole book about it!
I also love the long stitches around the the circles/squares! Terrific self portrait!
what a fantastic idea to get a realistic drawing of self, love of the elements in you piece.
ReplyDeleteThanks for kind words, ladies! This was fun and so exciting to see and meet everyone!!! It was such a great challenge...now that our 'meet' is overwith (except for those over achievers who want to do another self portrait!) I'm looking forward to our next challenge and seeing all the exciting work you all produce! I know I'm going to learn so much and be exposed to new techniques! Wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI think your drawing is really good. I'm hopeless and trace everything. Love the colours of your piece and the handwork.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the mirror trick, I bet everyone has been to the mirror pencil and paper in hand and tried it.
ReplyDeleteYou piece came out really well and there are no drawing police around here. Everyone has strong and weak points we just have to keep practicing.
Go Girl//////
What a great idea tracing your reflection. Your quilt turned out really well. I love the background technique you used, thanks for explaining how you did it.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to remember your tracing technique. and I'm with Marty -- I triple dog dare you to do more drawing! Nice work!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with the others, your drawing is very good and you really do get better with practice. I love the contrasting colours and the various techniques you have used. Beautiful beaded edge.
ReplyDeleteYour beading is gorgeous! And your color choices are way cool. I have to tell you...that was brave to stich through your face for the appearance of patchwork. Great job!
