I paper pieced this block together - hadn't used this method before (or again).
And then laid decorative wool over the top, it didn't seem enough, so I sandwiched the wool between two layers of tulle, and quilted a swirling ocean; and then attached this over the top of the block.
If you look really hard, there is a pod of plastic whales in the background.
I am quite happy with my interpretation of ... another place ... coral reef.

Love your piece. I come from coral reef country; you have made a beautiful homage to the life of coral itself and to the surroundings in which coral critters flourish.
Great looking quilt Chloe. Like your idea of using paper piecing :-)
I haven't a clue what "paper piecing" means or how it is done. But glad it worked for you this time.
I found the whales after much searching as they are hiding in the reef behind the sea weed and other life forms so well. ;-)
Great job of "other place" and bringing this small quilt to life with so much LIFE!
I'm right there with you on paper piecing but your quilt block turned out perfectly. I love the embellishments you added to the piece. The whales and quilting add a touch of whimsy.
I really like the imagery represented in the quilting lines of this piece. I wonder if instead of paper piecing, you would have found foundation piecing more enjoyable?
